Landgate’s new location data hub, SPUR, is open for business after an official launch by Lands Minister Terry Redman.
The launch at Landgate’s Midland building on 5 April was attended by VIPs from technology based businesses, start-up companies, the location industry, the education sector and government.
SPUR brings together a selection of Landgate services to support these groups by giving them access to a range of resources and networking opportunities to foster the innovation of new location-based technologies and industries.
General Manager SPUR Jodi Cant said eligible people and organisations could apply for developer licences which will enable them to explore government location data including information relating to property, roads, imagery and geography at an introductory rate.
“Our message is - if you have an idea to develop a new product or service involving location data come and talk to us,” Ms Cant said.
“We can help by pointing you in the right direction to access the data you need, share information about the emerging needs of government, and in some cases provide innovation support grants and seed funding to help with the development of new ideas.
“Landgate has already helped a number of local start-ups prototype new public safety, mining and other applications, and through SPUR, aims to help entrepreneurs to take the next steps in progressing these ideas to new businesses in WA.”
Ms Cant said there would also be opportunities to network at SPUR ‘hack-style’ events where people will be encouraged to collaborate to solve industry and government challenges using location data.
Landgate is already a leader in the innovation of location information within the public sector.
Landgate implemented WA’s Open Data Policy, making government information more easily available to industry business and the public.
Landgate also powers the state’s Shared Location Information Platform (SLIP) which provides a single, online point-of-entry to location and property information held by various government departments.
