The Lands Minister Hon Rita Saffioti has told Landgate’s International Women’s Day Breakfast that promoting “equality and fairness” and the desire to give everyone the “opportunity to live a good life” were some of the main reasons she entered politics.
“It is what’s inside you and your perseverance and hard work that will make you achieve,” Ms Saffioti told the gathering.
The Minister was the keynote speaker at the event which was held at Mandoon Estate on 8 March 2018. It was Landgate’s 21st IWD celebration and a great opportunity for some of our people to meet community and business leaders from Midland and the Swan Valley region.
The Minister’s speech followed a Welcome to Country by Noongar Elder Di Ryder who spoke about the positive influence of her mother and other women in her family.
The breakfast was sponsored by the City of Swan. The City’s Manager of Customer and Library Services, Debra Summers shared her views about feminism, describing it as the “radical notion that women are people”. She encouraged the audience to show kindness and courage, especially in the workplace.
As in previous years, Landgate made a $1,000 donation to charity. This year’s recipient was the Rise Community Network. The group’s General Manager Helen Dymond explained the valuable services Rise provides to the Midland and Hills community including Kira Safe House, a place where young women leaving violent family or domestic situations can seek help.
